Our Green School Committee

The Green Schools Committee is made up of students from 2nd through 6th class who help to spread the news about the efforts of the committee. They enabled Glebe NS to receive 4 Green School flags, one for litter, one for energy, water and travel.

We were awarded our Recycling flag a few years ago and continue recycling and picking up litter, with our litter squad, throughout the school.

We were awarded our second flag for Energy in 2016. To be awarded this flag we had to do our best to save energy around the school. We have a 5th class energy squad who go around each break and lunch and make sure all the doors of empty classrooms are closed and the lights are switched off.
We have also had an assembly on saving energy as well as many class lessons.

In 2018 we will be looking to be awarded our third flag. The theme for this flag is water.  We have been doing loads of water themed initiatives already including a ‘Walk for Water’ campaign in June and a ‘Something Fishy Project’ (See below).

Our Green School Committee consist of boys and girls from classes 1st through 6th. They are representatives of each class and are responsible for relaying any information to the class about their efforts and work in making the school more ‘Green’.

Our next flag is for water. Children of the committee went around the school to investigate for leaks and took a water meter reading both before and after we started our focus on water conservation. Our committee have also come up with fantastic ideas to promote the conservation of water in our school. Our school’s top tips are:

  • Have a shower instead of a bath
  • Remember to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
  • Add a hippo bag to the cistern of your toilet to reduce the amount of water you use when you flush
  • Use a bucket and sponge to wash your car
  • Make sure your washing machine and dishwasher are fully loaded
  • Keep a jug of water in the fridge
  • Use a water butt to harvest rain water from the gutters

This year we are working towards a flag on bio-diversity. We have already made bug hotels to put around the school yard and there will be ongoing lessons about bio-diversity in every classroom throughout the year.

The committee, led by our very own Ms Vogan, intends to run a ‘Walk for Water’ campaign, an Action Day for Water with several games and experiments for each of the classes to do and a workshop for water for the older children also.
